David August Heil
Founder • Creative Director • Chief Executive Officer
David Heil is an American fashion designer, specializing in custom menswear. He is particularly noted for his clean, modern, tailored lines and an almost fanatical attention to detail. David is Chief Executive Officer of David August, Inc., which today provides complete bespoke wardrobes for some of the most well known business leaders, sports professionals and entertainers in the world.
David is a Southern California native from an entrepreneurial family that was involved in real estate, commercial property development and construction. He grew up working in the family businesses, helping out on construction sites and in the office, after school and on weekends. It wasn’t uncommon for family dinners to start after 10pm, when his parents and his three siblings finally wrapped up work for the day.
David first tasted success on his own in High School, boldly promoting rock concerts, selling fireworks and even brokering tickets to the Olympics. “I grew up in an environment where work and play and relationships all blended together. It was all life.” David said. “I reason I love what we do for our clients even today is because they become friends--and you want your friends to have to the very best. You don’t want to ever let them down, because it’s a close relationship. That whole dynamic is how we grew up. So when I think about a business that is really a lifestyle, that’s what David August is.”
After graduating from Arizona State University, David worked in sales for one of his family’s hotel properties, but knew that wasn’t his real destiny. Rather quickly he realized that there might be a way to combine his innate business and people skills, along with his one of his lifelong passions: Men’s clothing. David quite simply, loved clothes. And he looked so good in the wardrobe that he carefully curated for himself, that friends were constantly begging him to do the same for them.
But when David Heil tried on his very first custom suit--one created specifically to his unique measurements and considering how he was going to wear it--well, that was a revelation. If more men knew how much better an outfit that was specifically made for them fit and felt, how much more confident they would be when wearing it, he was sure they’d want another one. And another. Almost inevitably, with initial seed funding from his father, David August Heil became a clothier.
Because there were few places in Southern California where a man could turn for a truly custom suit, in the early years, David found himself wandering small Italian villages, searching for the most fabulous fabrics made on ancient looms, and for families who for generations had created the most exquisite shoes, silk ties or accessories. He learned from master tailors on Savile Row what constitutes the perfect buttonhole. He found that one guy in an industrial area of El Paso who made a better belt than anyone in the world. He experienced how material is properly cut so that it lies just so; and how a simple needle and thread in the hands of a skilled artisan will always be superior to a sewing machine.
To all that learning, David applied a design sense born out of his uniquely American experience, as well as his legendary attention to detail. Only when the fit is perfect and the whole outfit is perfectly pulled together from the pocket square to the lining, will he call it finished. He prefers to meet with clients in their own closets, where he makes sure all those details can come together as they were meant to. Through the years, even clients who have worn other custom suits, have remarked that a David August creation feels MORE custom, fits that much better and when all eyes are on him, gives a man the power to walk into any room and just own it.
Not surprisingly, men of significance began to seek him out; to tell their other significant friends about David August; until the company became one of the largest of its kind, with presence in California, Las Vegas, Florida and New York.
As the business moves towards its 25th anniversary, David Heil continues to push the envelope beyond what’s expected from men’s fashion. The company now offers complete business and formal wardrobes and casual elements as well, so a client will look equally good at their wedding, at their most important business meeting or lying on a faraway beach. And because the clothing is so refined, it’s not uncommon for one DA client to recognize another, based exclusively on their mutual understanding of what can only be described as “The Look.” It is distinctively modern and distinctively American.
It is entirely David August.
David lives in Laguna Beach with his wife and three of his four children. He is active in a number of charities on both coasts and is a founding board member of Miracles For Kids, a group that supplies a safety net for families with ill children.

Intelligent, bold, and confident, Cedric Channels is set apart by his unique background.
Rather than coming from the world of fashion, Cedric came to David August from the world of business. He studied business and Loyola Marymount University, and upon graduation started working for the Sacramento Kings basketball organization—working his way up from ticket sales to managing their entire corporate sales department, and eventually becoming a corporate liaison for the NBA. Because of this, Cedric very much understands the world that many David August clients are coming from. He has an eye for fashion with a corporate perspective. He’s a no-nonsense guy. He understands how valuable time is, and not a single meeting is wasted: it’s all about ascertaining needs, and then making sure those needs are met flawlessly and above expectation.
When asked what his goal is when sitting down with a new client, he jokes that it’s to make his wife happy. But there’s a truth behind the jest, as he explains: “The thing that makes my day every single day is when a client says ‘thank you’ at the end of the meeting, and he’s not saying ‘thank you’ for doing business, he’s saying ‘thank you for transforming my life’. When they’re dressed right, this confidence starts to roll through their life: not just in business, but their wife starts to notice, they start getting compliments when they’re out, it changes the way they carry themselves, and it’s ends up changing everything. That’s why I’m at David August: to be a part of transforming lives.”
Micah Leftwich’s friends would describe him as charismatic, intelligent, extremely passionate, and, of course, well-dressed. That’s because Micah understands the true potential of a wardrobe: being well-dressed is one of the most clear and powerful ways a man can portray his success to anyone and everyone he meets. So his mission when meeting with clients is to ensure that they are always sending the right message with their clothes: that they are powerful, intelligent, confidant, and perfectly put together. He’s particularly ardent about ensuring that his clients stay current and contemporary and remain on the cutting edge of trends instead of falling behind, and making sure they feel confident whether their in the boardroom or at the beach. After all, he says, “Why wouldn’t every man want to be well-dressed for every occasion?”
We’re right there with you, Micah. When he’s not using his passion for fashion to ensure his clients are flawlessly attired, you might be able to find him sky diving in Hawaii or surfing in his native Huntington Beach.
On paper, Andrew Pavlovich’s title is “Clothier Assitant”, but if you asked him to describe his role, he’d tell you that he helps clients achieve their sartorial aspirations. A Laguna Beach native and a graduate of USC School of Business Administration, Easy-going, charismatic, and talented, Andrew has a penchant for classic design and with a discerning taste in modern aesthetics. Best illustrated in his clothing designs, his styling interests favor wide lapels, a tapered coat waist, and slim trousers. Each detail must be carefully considered: form, function, and curb appeal; these are the tenets of his design process. When meeting with clients, he first seeks a comprehensive understanding of their specific lifestyle to ensure that all their basic clothing needs are met, then creates lasting wardrobes which stand the test of time.
Andrew encourages you to try David August because fashion is a direct expression of personal style, which gives you the unique opportunity to showcase who you are. The first thing that anyone notices about a man is how he presents himself, and it’s important to look the part that you want to play. We think that’s excellent advice, Andrew. When he’s not outfitting David August clients in their optimal vestiaries, he enjoys surfing, volleyball, and hanging out with family and friends.
